ILLUMINATION for the First Lesson
The Lord, on Mount Sinai, reveals his name to Moses. God re-issues the Ten Commandments, and thus he establishes a covenant with the people he has chosen.

ILLUMINATION for the Second Lesson
Paul begins his letter to the Romans by recounting salvation history. All those who have taken on Christ's name have received grace and been called to apostleship.

ILLUMINATION for the Second Lesson
The apostle Paul, celebrating his service to God, declares that God has revealed the secret plan hidden through the ages. The plan, revealed in the ministry of the Christian community, offers adoption as children of God to everyone who will accept the gracious call.

ILLUMINATION for the First Lesson
The exiles from Babylon are finally able to return to their holy land to begin their building of the second temple. Isaiah the prophet proclaims to the former exiles that light has arrived, and thus God's people will sing of how their king will rule righteously and bring justice.

ILLUMINATION for the First Lesson
As Isaiah had looked for the return of his people from exile, he now sketches what he envisions as a picture of true service to God. In his proclamation, he combines the two great themes of Jewish hope: the future coming of the ideal King, and the acceptance of the servant role.

ILLUMINATION for the Second Lesson
In a summary of a sermon to Cornelius, Peter offers encouragement by saying that God treats all people the same. Paramount in Peter's message is the invitation to explore the significance of the Lord's baptism, the beginning of the era in which the good news of peace was pro-claimed for the benefit of all people.

34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: 35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. 36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) 37 That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; 38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

ILLUMINATION for the FIRST LESSON
In this Servant Song, God gives words to the prophet Isaiah which contain a depth of meaning that neither he nor his hearers could imagine. They foretell a Messiah whose life would recapitulate the history of his people, and thus, in time, expand the New Covenant.

ILLUMINATION for the SECOND LESSON
The apostle Paul urges the church to be unified in its mission and outlook as it lives out the message of the cross in its midst. With this urging comes a reminder that each of us has been endowed by the Spirit in some way and with some gift.

ILLUMINATION for the First Lesson
The prophet Amos becomes the spoiler to the Israelites as he proclaims to them words of judgment from the Lord. This education for catastrophe from Amos is intended to highlight the urgency of their needed change in behavior in hopes that they will return to the Lord's ways.
A reading from the Book of the Prophet Amos:
1 Hear this word that the LORD hath spoken against you, O children of Israel, against the whole family which I brought up from the land of Egypt, saying, 2 You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities. 3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed? 4 Will a lion roar in the forest, when he hath no prey? will a young lion cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing? 5 Can a bird fall in a snare upon the earth, where no gin is for him? shall one take up a snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all? 6 Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it? 7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. 8 The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord GOD hath spoken, who can but prophesy?

ILLUMINATION for the Second Lesson
Paul takes up the problems of factions by appealing to the Corinthians to agree in purpose as well as in words and come to a common mind. While these human divisions are not primarily theological, but personal as well, Paul emphasizes that it is not only impossible for Christ to be divided, but that the whole church is his body.
