HIGHLIGHTS OF ST. ALBAN'S HISTORY

1918 Meetings held in Westcott Street area explored need for an Episcopal Church in 17th Ward. A Committee of Organization was formed, consisting of William H. Jones, S. N. Farmer, Mrs. Caroline Hobkirk, H. W. Antley, Mrs. C. E. Mautz, John R. Wickes, and C. F. Sours.
Jan. 5, 1919 The Rev. W. Delancey Wilson conducted first parish service in home of John R. Wickes, 131 Clarke St. Early services also were conducted in the homes of Arthurj. Horrocks, L. P. Kellogg, and others.
Feb. 2, 1919 Candlelight service in the home of the Rev. William S. Hayward, 238 Strong Ave., Bishop Olmstead officiating.
March 7, 1919 Diocese approved purchase of 238 Strong Ave. for use by the parish as its church. Building was remodeled for church use by people of the parish.
June 1921 First confirmation service in the parish conducted by Bishop Charles T. Olmstead.
June 10, 1921 The Rev. Carroll B. Bates, first priest assigned to parish.
March, 1922 Founder's Guild, first women's group, organized. Later changed name to St. Alban's Guild.
June 17, 1929 (Old St. Alban's Day) Cornerstone laid for new church at Meadowbrook Drive and Scott Ave. Built for $20,000 on land provided by the Diocese.
Sept. 16, 1929 Church dedicated by Bishop Fiske.
June 1935 Church vandalized, serious damage to altar, organ and interior.
Sept. 1935 Church, restored after weeks of work by parishioners, rededicated by Bishop Coley.
Dec.1943 First rectory purchased at 1211 Meadowbrook Drive.
Jan. 1, 1947 Became self-supporting parish under the Rev. Vincent L. Bennett.
June 1947 First June Jubilee held.
1952 Parish House (Scott Ave. Wing) built for $55,000; special mention in records of work done on project by J. Howard Bergstrom.
1958 Nave expanded, entrance shifted to Scott Ave. side; East Wing classrooms built. Total cost, $145,000.
June 14, 1968 The Rev. Culver L. Mowers, first seminarian from St. Alban's, ordained Deacon by Bishop Higley.
1969 New chancel and sacristy; new study and offices; new Casavant pipe organ installed. Total cost, $96,000.
1973 New rectory acquired at 311 Hurlburt Road.
July 11, 1976 The Rev. William C. Redfield, second seminarian from St. Alban's, ordained Deacon by Bishop Cole.
June 22, 1979 St. Alban's celebrates its 50th anniversary at the corner of Meadowbrook Drive and Scott Ave., and its 60th anniversary as a parish.
